The Pokémon he was interested in was standing right in front of him, purple tail swishing through the air. It had its back to him. The wreckage from Giovanni’s army was still smouldering in the background.
Slowly, the Pokémon turned its head and stared at him with a single purple eye.
‘You are not from Team Rocket,’ the creature said.
“No, I’m not. Giovanni’s merely an ant compared to me. I’m here with a different purpose,” Fury said. His own eye stared right back with his arms behind his back.
Mewtwo merely snorted as it turned around completely. ‘You humans are the same. You all seek to keep me contained. To control what powers that have been bestowed upon me.’
Fury frowned. “I won’t deny, Mewtwo, that your power is very interesting. With you by my side, there is little that can stop us,” Fury said.
His Volcarona flapped her wings with agitation as Mewtwo held up its arm.
“Easy, Vol,” he murmured, pulling his arms away. He held up a folder. “Before you kill me, let me show you something.” He pulled out several pictures of mass destruction and threw them on scorched rock. “There are many people who want me to capture you or kill you. They seem to think that you were created evil.”
Mewtwo’s eyes flashed and Fury suppressed the urge to wince as a telepathic force invaded his mind. Quickly, he focused on the Pokémon’s eyes and blocked the attack.
‘I am evil?’ it said, narrowing its purple eyes. ‘It is you, humans, who are the evil ones. Can I not choose for myself what I want to do? Must I always run from those who would abuse my powers? I am not evil! You are the evil ones.’
Mewtwo’s eyes began to glow blue and the pictures were thrown into the fire behind it.
Fury listened to the Pokémon intently. “I never said I was going to do either of those. I believe that the Council made another stupid ass decision. I’m here to offer a job.”
The glow in its eyes slowly faded. Fury felt the ferocious attack on his mind fade into curiosity.
Fury nodded and dared to take a step forward, holding the folder out. “A job…with pay. You would be a slave to no one and you would also be preventing those who would want to recreate Giovanni’s experiments.”
The folder began to glow and he let go of it. The papers inside the folder floated out. Mewtwo glanced at them before turning its gaze towards Fury.
‘And if I say no?’ It said, frowning.
“Then I go on my merry way. Maybe take a vacation in Fiji and you never hear from me again. Of course, if you come to work for me, I can assure you that SHIELD can keep these idiots away from you.”
‘What of my fellow clones? Can this shield protect them as well?’
“Yes. For those of your clones that wish to have a Pokémon trainer will be matched with several of my agents. Those that don’t…” he let his comment trail away.
‘For those that don’t, will they remain where they are?’ The Pokémon asked, giving Fury a sharp look.
“For as long as they wish without the influence of humans,” Fury answered, bringing two fingers up to his lips. He blew on them, sending out a shrill whistle.
“You don’t have to answer right now, but I’d like you to meet someone who works at SHIELD.”
‘Another human lackey?’ Mewtwo asked, throwing the folder and papers into the fire.
“Human? No? Lackey? He might take offence to that. Meet Absol,” Fury said, motioning towards the quadrupedal Pokémon. “He works for me as well.”
Absol growled his greeting before sitting down on his hindquarters. His badge shined in the light of the fire. He barked at Mewtwo.
‘He says that the work you do is for the good of the humans and the Pokémon that live on this earth,’ Mewtwo said, glancing from the Absol to Fury again. ‘If I join you and I wish to leave…will it be possible?’
Fury gave a grin as he turned and climbed on Volcarona’s back. Absol jumped behind him. “You can. You can even go back to the cave and we wipe out your existence from Human history. You’ll fall into myth and legend.”
Mewtwo thought about it before rising into the air. ‘I will join,’ it said.
Fifteen years later, an older but wiser Nick Fury stared at the monitors on the SHIELD helicarrier.
‘This is very rare to see the great Nick Fury lost in thought,’ a voice said, soft footsteps padding up to stand beside him. Coffee floated towards Fury.
“Were you reading my mind?” Fury asked, accepting the coffee from Mewtwo’s psychic grip.
‘One doesn’t need to read your mind to know that you are not paying attention to the material before you,’ Mewtwo added dryly as its purple eyes gazed at the material. A blue cube shined on the screen. ‘Is this it? The cube that they have found with the one they call Captain America?’
Fury took a sip. “We’re about to begin Phase Two.”
Mewtwo stayed quiet for a moment before nodding. “What were you thinking about?”
Fury placed the cup down on a small table, waving his hands to turn the screens off. “I was thinking about the time you joined SHIELD,” he said, turning towards the Pokémon. “I have to ask…do you regret it?”
Mewtwo closed its eyes slowly, taking a deep breath.
